When Davey Allison died as the result of a July 1993 helicopter crash, it was a tragedy of the highest order.
Life moved on, however, and NASCAR continued to race throughout the rest of the season. That left Robert Yates Racing in search of another driver, and that driver turned out to be Ernie Irvan.
There was only one problem. Irvan was under contract with Morgan-McClure Motorsports, the team with which he’d first rocketed to success three years earlier. Negotiations between Irvan and Morgan-McClure were decidedly tense, and Irvan would, in fact, make the move to Robert Yates Racing just prior to that year’s Southern 500.
What did it take in order for that to happen? This is team owner Larry McClure’s story.
