The race, which would turn out to be the only victory of Bodine’s Winston Cup career, has been shrouded in doubt and confusion for more than 30 years now. It all started when Bodine’s King Racing crew pulled off a — for the time — lightning-fast pit stop. So when the rest of the leaders cycled through their stops, Bodine took over the top spot.
At the start of a subsequent caution, however, the pace car picked up Dale Earnhardt as the leader. After several laps, Bodine was placed at the head of the field. Try as they might, neither Dale Earnhardt nor Darrell Waltrip could pass Bodine over the final 80 laps or so, allowing Bodine to post the win.
