UPDATE 2: The National Motorsports Appeals Panel today heard and considered an appeal of a Behavioral penalty issued on Sept. 27, 2022 to driver William Byron and team owner Rick Hendrick in the NASCAR Cup Series.
The penalty concerns the following section in the 2022 NASCAR Rule Book: Section 4.3 NASCAR Member Conduct and 4.4 NASCAR Member Code of Conduct Penalty Options and Guidelines. The penalties issued were a $50,000 fine to Byron and the loss of 25 championship driver and owner points.
Upon hearing the testimony, the decisions of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel are:
- That the Appellants violated the Rule(s) set forth in the Penalty Notice.
- That the Panel amends the original penalty assessed by NASCAR to read: $100,000 fine for William Byron and no loss of NASCAR Cup Series Championship Team Owner or Driver points.

The Appellants have the right to appeal the decision of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer in accordance with the NASCAR Rule Book.

UPDATE (10-3-2022): Hendrick Motorsports’ appeal of a penalty it received after the NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway will be heard Thursday ahead of the Round of 12 elimination race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course.
Driver William Byron and his No. 24 team were docked 25 points, respectively, and Byron was fined $50,000 after his intentional contact to Denny Hamlin under caution sent Hamlin spinning out of the top five at Texas. NASCAR penalized Byron for violating Sections 4.3.A & 4.4.C of the NASCAR Rule Book, which pertain to the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct.
Three members of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel will hear the appeal and rule on whether to uphold, modify or rescind the penalty.
