NASCAR, teams extend charter negotiations UPDATES

UPDATE 2: NASCAR is offering to extend the charter system for seven years concurrent to its new media rights agreement, according to four sources familiar with the talks, as teams fight for something closer to a permanent status for their version of franchises. Sources say NASCAR’s offer is to extend the system from 2025 through 2031. Teams want the system locked into NASCAR’s rules in perpetuity, along with getting additional guaranteed media revenue. As a middle ground, teams are open to something resembling an “evergreen” status where they keep the charter permanently as long as they meet a list of requirements that would be agreed on with NASCAR, such as running every race. NASCAR and the RTA had no comment on the specific terms being discussed when contacted.

UPDATE Feb. 1, 2024: Teams have let their charter negotiating period with NASCAR expire without another extension, as frustration builds amid the sides heading into the start of the 2024 racing season without an agreement.

….

However, as the calendar turns to February, sources say that teams unanimously agreed to not extend their agreement with NASCAR a further month, a symbolic move that appears designed to highlight their unhappiness with the state of the talks. NASCAR technically does not need a deal with a majority or unanimous number of teams for there to be a new charter agreement, but teams are currently sticking together and NASCAR for the moment is negotiating with the teams’ self-appointed Team Negotiating Committee. On that committee are Joe Gibbs Racing President Dave Alpern, RFK Racing President Steve Newmark, 23XI Racing investor Curtis Polk and Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chair Jeff Gordon. In the absence of a formal negotiation window, and with the current charter expiring in less than a year, teams could now technically go shop their rights to other racing series. NASCAR and the Race Team Alliance, a coalition of 15 NASCAR teams, both declined comment.

The exact remaining deal points that the sides are at loggerheads on was unclear, but teams have been seeking permanent charters among other asks on top of the additional revenue.

Although not a certainty, one of the sources familiar with the situation said that a deal was likely months away. Most industry executives believe a deal will be reached.

ORIGINAL POST – 1-12-2024: NASCAR and its premier series teams have agreed to extend their charter renewal negotiations window after the prior one lapsed at the end of December. The racing circuit and teams are attempting to figure out a new governing framework with the main issues needing to be solved including the amount of money being offered by NASCAR, how they’ll spilt it and whether charters could become permanently owned by teams. At the moment, teams only control the charters through the end of the current nine-year charter agreement that started in 2016 and expires Dec. 31, 2024.

Five people familiar with the matter confirmed that the sides had extended the negotiating window, with two noting through January. The new deal wouldn’t start until Jan. 1, 2025, but NASCAR may want to avoid having the topic become a distraction once the season begins in February. NASCAR and the Race Team Alliance declined comment.
