Storyline – Speeds will be up as Cup gets back to intermediate track: After a recent stretch of short track races, NASCAR Cup teams return to an intermediate speedway at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend.  With that, speeds will be high and teams will be searching for grip to maximize that speed.  One tuning tool that teams use is air pressure in the tires.  Goodyear supplies teams with data that supports its minimum recommended pressure recommendations at each race.  Going below those guidelines, along with geometry setting on the car, carries a risk of damaging a tire’s sidewall due to over-deflection.  Damaging a tire, especially early in a run before pressures are allowed to build, can harm the tire to the point of air loss.

“Speeds and loads will be high in this week’s Cup race back on an intermediate track for the first time since early-March at Las Vegas,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.  “It’s always a risk versus reward proposition with air pressure settings, balancing speed and durability.  We always work with the teams to help them understand how the air and car settings like camber will affect the tires.  In advance of an event we provide a lot of data based on various settings teams could run.  Then, of course, we are at the track all weekend with our engineers keeping an eye of tire performance and consulting with teams based on what we see.”

Notes – Cup teams on new right-side tire at Texas: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Texas this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires these teams ran at Texas last September . . . Cup teams also ran this tire set-up at Las Vegas earlier this season and are scheduled to run it again at Kansas and Nashville later . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.
