Travis Tiller, aged 87, of Kingsport, TN, passed away on November 7, 2024. Born on May 15, 1937, Travis was a charismatic and charming southern gentleman, known for his good nature, adventurous soul, and sense of humor. He was also known to flirt on occasions.
Travis enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in September 1954 and spent 8 years as a Flying Leatherneck, serving as an Aviation Machinist Mate and Crew Chief on an R4Q “Flying Boxcar” at MCAS Cherry Point, and then Plane Captain for the Aircraft Engineering Squadron of A4 Skyhawk aircraft and HMX-1 Helicopters at MCAS Quantico and a middleweight boxer for the Quantico Boxing Team. During his service, he was awarded 2 Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals. He received an Honorable Discharge in October 1962: after which, he embarked on a notable career in racing, beginning in drag racing, both as a driver and owner. He also owned and operated 3 drag racing facilities. In 1974, with no Fortune 500 sponsor or major factory deal, Travis began competing as an independent NASCAR driver, car #46. He participated in more than 50 races in the Winston Cup circuit, with his first race in North Wilkesboro, NC. Travis’s racing prowess was also highlighted when he performed in the movie “Greased Lightning”. His contributions to NASCAR were recognized when he received the People’s Choice Award in 2019 from the Back to the Roots NASCAR organization. Following his racing career, he continued working in the coal mining industry in Southwest Virginia and was co-owner of Oliver Coal Sales in Coeburn, VA, for several years.
Travis’s hobbies included collecting Civil War relics and old mining lights, hats, and tools. He was actively involved in various communities, being a member of Racers Reunion, Back to the Roots NASCAR, The Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion, the VFW, and his local Breakfast Club in Kingsport.
