CONCORD, N.C. — Kyle Larson experienced an emotional roller coaster on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In Larson’s second bid of attempting the Memorial Day Weekend Double, running both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, he was involved in a Lap 92 restart wreck. Larson downshifted entering Turn 2, kicking the No. 17 Dallara-Chevrolet around and into the outside wall. Sting Ray Robb and Kyffin Simpson were collected in the incident.
Larson will be credited with a 28th-place finish. It was his third wreck at Indianapolis in the last month.
“It was a bit crazy there on the start,” Larson told the Fox Sports broadcast. “I got tight behind Takuma [Sato] and as I finally shaded left, I got loose and all over the place, so I spun. Hate that I got a little bit antsy on the restart and caused that crash. Just bummed out.
“I’ll try to get over this quickly and get on to Charlotte.”
Larson stalled on pit road earlier in the race with a clutch mistake on pit road, exiting his stall in second gear. After the miscue, he had driven from 31st position to 16th prior to his race ending.
The good news for Larson is he will have ample time to return to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. With the initial green flag of the Indianapolis 500 being delayed by more than a half hour, in addition to multiple crashes in the early stages, it would have been cutting it close if Larson would have made it back in time for the green flag.
The No. 5 Chevrolet will take the green flag tonight from second position, alongside pole sitter Chase Briscoe.
