Notes – Cup teams on COTA tire at Mexico City: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire than those in the Xfinity Series at Mexico City this weekend . . . they will run the same Goodyear tire code on all four corners of the car . . . this tire debuted at COTA in March . . . Cup teams are scheduled to run it again at Sonoma, Chicago street course and Watkins Glen later in the season . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.
Wet Weather Tires – Goodyear to bring white-lettered “wets” to Mexico City: Goodyear will bring its 18-inch wet weather radial tires to Mexico City for the Cup cars, should NASCAR determine that conditions warrant . . . Cup teams will have 6 sets of wet weather tires for the event, with a maximum of 5 sets for the race . . . NASCAR Cup teams last ran a wet weather tire in competition on the Chicago street course last July . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear’s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.
Goodyear quote – Stu Grant, Goodyear’s general manager of global race tires: “This is an exciting weekend for the sport, with the first points-paying Cup race outside the United States. Pulling off this event has been an unbelievable undertaking by NASCAR and all its teams and stakeholders. Just the logistics involved in moving the entire sport down to Mexico City – with no disruption to the schedule, mind you – is an amazing accomplishment, and one that will move the sport forward and create a lot of new fans.”
