Goodyear Racing Notes: Naval Base Coronado

Teams in all three of NASCAR’s national series will run familiar Goodyear road course tires this weekend for their much-anticipated visit to San Diego’s Qualcomm Circuit at Naval Base Coronado.

At 3.4 miles, the brand new street course is the longest track on this year’s schedule and features 16 turns around the San Diego Bay and Naval Base Coronado, one of the world’s foremost military installations.

The Goodyear Racing Eagle road course tire run by NASCAR Cup Series teams this weekend has been used at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) and Watkins Glen International this year, and at all six road and street course races last season.

NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams are also familiar with their tire setup. Introduced at Sonoma Raceway last summer, both series have run it twice this season.

Unlike Goodyear’s oval track tire packages, the same tire specification is used on both sides of the car. Teams in all three series also have wet-weather tires available if required.

“Visiting a new track brings a new set of challenges for the industry – but one constant for the teams will be their Goodyear Racing Eagle tires,” said Justin Fantozzi, Goodyear Director of Racing for the Americas. “The road course specification we introduced for the Cup Series last season will be raced for the ninth time this weekend, and we have seen consistent performance at other road and street courses. That familiarity gives teams a reliable baseline as they prepare for a new venue.”
