Tanner Gray crew chief to miss Phoenix race: UPDATES

UPDATE 2: Jeff Hensley’s wife, Lynn, shared an update on the veteran crew chief’s health status.

Update on Jeff Hensley:
After 16 days in the hospital, Jeff was finally released and transferred to a rehabilitation facility, where he can work on building his strength back. Sepsis took an incredible toll on his body and he has a bit of a road ahead to regain his strength, but we are thankful to be moving into this next chapter of recovery. Each day brings new steps forward, some big and some small, but all working toward getting back to the track. We’re celebrating every bit of progress along the way!
We cannot begin to thank everyone who has reached out, sent messages, checked on us and especially prayed for Jeff. The love and support we have felt from so many, near and far, has been overwhelming. We are especially grateful for those who have so generously contributed and for the dear friends who took it upon themselves to rally others around us during this time. We truly believe in the power of prayer and we have felt those prayers every step of the way.
One day, one milestone, one lap at a time.

UPDATE: We’re learning more about Hensley’s health and overall condition, following a Facebook post made by his wife, Lynn Ramsey Hensley, saying that he had sepsis.

“Last week, Jeff called the race at Charlotte… This week he fought for his life with sepsis in the hospital,” the Facebook post read. “We praise God this morning that Jeff is still with us. He is expected to make a full recovery. Thank you to all who have called, texted, visited, and most of all PRAYED!! We have felt the prayers. A special thank you to our TRICON Garage family for all the love and support.”

In May, two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch passed away at the age of 41, after severe pneumonia turned into sepsis.

Hensley, however, is expected to make a full recovery.

Previous post: Jeff Hensley, who has been leading the No. 15 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro team since the beginning of 2024, will not be making the trip to Avondale, Arizona this weekend due to an illness, and will thus hand over shot-calling duties to long-time TRICON Garage employee Jacob Hampton.

Hampton has recorded 36 races of experience as a crew chief in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, working first with Taylor Gray in the second half of the 2023 campaign, before being promoted to the full-time crew chief of the No. 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro in 2025.
