UPDATE III: I hear NASCAR is discussing expanding the provisional starters allowed in a Winston Cup race from 4 to 6(not sure about the champ prov).(1-18-98), more info: I hear that the provisional system is going to be changed for ’98. They will take 36 from time trials, 6 more from car owner points plus a former champion. And this year, NASCAR plans to make the 43rd spot mandatory if a former W.C. champion DNQs, rather than giving him the option of taking a regular provisional. Expect an announcement within the next week or so (I wonder if they will expand the field eligible for provs from 40), will be updating the prov page soon(1-21-98), It’s OFFICIAL: Provisionals increased to 7, fields increased to 43.
