“After having the aero numbers I(Tom) received analyzed it appears the Monte Carlo figures fall in line with 2 year old data especially when compared to specific portion of the car. Without more authentication we can not consider these numbers valid. The common information floating around is that the Taurus develops up to 30 % more downforce than the Monte Carlo with similar drag characteristics, something most aerodynamic experts are suspect of. If the Taurus is in fact making that much more downforce NASCAR will certainly make changes before Darlington. I’m(Tom) hearing that the wind tunnel tests this week will bring about at least a spoiler reduction on the Ford Taurus but that a modification to the C pillar on the Taurus is also being contemplated if trimming the spoiler is not effective. There appear to be some concerns that only so much can be taken off the spoiler without causing the cars to get overly loose on corner entry but bringing the C pillars outwards would reduce overall rear downforce and slow the cars on the straights as well. This modification could be coming for all three makes if speeds continue to increase.”(Tom Hintz – Thinkin’ Racing)(3-15-98)
