He asked teammate Jimmy Spencer, who had tested the car at Atlanta, to take it out for a few laps. He went out for a few practice laps, posting a faster speed than Waltrips( Times-Dispatch ) — UPDATE 2: obviously this didn’t happen as DW failed to make the race but the Times-Dispatch reports this: Waltrip did not plan to be the only driver practicing his car yesterday. Robby Gordon prepared to drive a few practice laps and possibly qualify Waltrips car. But according to Waltrips team, Gordons co-owners did not want to risk the driver crashing, and asked him not to attempt any laps AND In an effort to figure out what was wrong with his car, Waltrip asked teammate Jimmy Spencer to drive Waltrip’s car during practice. According to one team member, Spencer’s lap times were seven-tenths of a second faster than Waltrip’s.
