- Jeff Krough: it was a year ago Jeff Krough was seriously injured in a wreck at Milwaukee. I have been asked many times about Krogh’s status, but I had no clue and didn’t know who to contact, so Dave’s story is timely. (7-2-2000)
- Krogh to Outpatient: Jeff Krogh will go into outpatient treatment at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital near Denver, CO on October 22nd(last Friday). Krogh is still in a cervical halo, due to a broken vertebrae sustained in the practice accident in Milwaukee. Krogh hopes to be completely released on December 20th, 1999. While in outpatient treatment, Krogh will live in an apartment near the hospital with his parents, wife and son. Krogh can walk with the use of a cane and works out a lot on a treadmill and stationary bike. - From NOL: Since the last update in mid-August, Jeff Krogh has made significant improvements in his rehabilitation from the brain injury he sustained on July 3. Krogh had the trach tube and gastrostomy tube removed Tuesday, and he is beginning to eat solid foods. He still has trouble with thin liquids and bread, but otherwise is progressing quickly toward a normal diet. Krogh’s speech is greatly improved. He is doing his own dressing, grooming and shaving, which has been difficult because of the halo vest. According to his physician, Alan Weintraub, MD, the halo should be removed in the near future. Krogh continues to use a wheelchair, but is making significant gains in ambulation, and is walking in the parallel bars up to 300 feet at a time with spotting. The next patient-family-staff conference is scheduled for Friday to review progress and set new goals. Krogh is in rehabilitation therapies approximately seven hours per day now, and is extremely motivated to get better. “Rehab is very hard work,” Krogh said. “Most people have no idea how hard this is. I’m proud that I’m starting to walk again … I’m getting there, slowly but surely.” He has had many family members visit during this past week which has been very important to him. “My family has helped me a ton,” Krogh said. “Karla (Krogh’s wife) has been wonderful, and my parents have been great … my family is everything to me now.” According to Krogh’s mother, Molly, the family continues to be excited about his progress. “Jeff is doing wonderfully” she said. During his leisure time, Krogh spends time with his family and visitors from time to time. Last Friday he watched the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race, and on Saturday night he watched the entire NASCAR Winston Cup Series race, which he enjoyed very much. Krogh wanted to again thank everyone for their support, and this time wanted to specifically thank Dr. Jerry Punch for his kindness, Bill Amick for flying Karla to Froedtert Hospital and to the entire crew of the No. 56 car.(9-2-1999)
- From NOL: Jeff Krogh continues to make good progress in rehabilitation at Craig Hospital. Krogh, 27, was severely injured in an accident during the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division event at The Milwaukee Mile on July 3. Hospital spokesperson Kenny Hosack said Krogh is medically stable, and continues to gradually improve from the traumatic brain injury he sustained. Last week Krogh was fitted with a halo vest to stabilize his neck for an unstable fracture at the C-2 (second cervical) level. The rigid vest is attached to steel rods and a halo ring that bolts into the skull. Krogh will wear the device for the next 4-8 weeks. The halo is an inconvenience, but allows the neck to stabilize during active rehabilitation. Krogh is involved in rehabilitation therapies approximately six hours per day, including speech/language therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. He continues to use a wheelchair for mobility, but has started to stand in a standing frame in therapy, and has begun using a stationary bicycle for 15-20 minutes at a time. He is also now able to eat soft foods. Krogh continues to have a “talking trach,” so his speech is sometimes difficult to understand, but it is improving also. He tends to get confused when fatigued, but is responding to questions and entering into conversations, and his personality and sense of humor are coming back. The Craig staff is very pleased with his progress and enjoy Jeff and his family. Jeff’s family is staying in the Craig apartments, and they are very appreciative of everyone’s thoughtfulness and support. The Krogh family continues to ask that there be no media interviews or public statements until further notice, and that their privacy be respected.
