Don`t be shocked if NASCAR suddenly mandates the “HANS” head-and-neck restraint system for use this season, rather than waiting for next year. CART and Formula One already have made the newly refined device mandatory for drivers next season, and NASCAR — in the wake of the deaths of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin — has been taking heat for not yet following the open-wheel series` lead. Ford and General Motors are intensely encouraging their NASCAR drivers to use the device, and there are hints that NASCAR soon may spring what would amount to at least a public relations surprise(Orlando Sentinel).
