Cup Testing at Daytona is OVER – Wallace fastest Thursday: The second wave of Winston Cup testing wrapped up on Thursday and Mike Wallace, driving the #33 Andy Petree Racing Chevy, was the fastest with a lap of 184.302mph turned in the afternoon drafting session. Wallace will be making an attempt to qualify for the 44th annual Daytona 500 on Feb. 17, but the team is still seeking a sponsor. He believes the team’s performance during the test will help in that pursuit. “There was a couple of (sponsors) here (Tuesday) that say they are interested in something,” Wallace said. “But as Andy has and myself and the team, we’ve heard that before.” Wallace will have a hectic schedule during Speedweeks 2002. He’ll compete in the Feb. 15 Florida Dodge Dealers 250 CTS race driving for [#52] Kenny Schrader. He’ll race his in the EAS/GNC Live Well 300 in a car owned by himself and Fred Biagi and he’ll take a shot at making the field for the Daytona 500 with APR. Beyond Daytona, Wallace says the only thing solid in his schedule are about 10 BGN races. Rounding out the top-five speeds were #9-Bill Elliott (184.298), #41-Jimmy Spencer (184.222), #18-Bobby Labonte (184.207) and #17-Matt Kenseth (184.185). All of those speeds were posted during Thursday’s afternoon drafting session. Excluding speeds from the final drafting sessions from each wave Winston Cup testing, Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate Jimmie Johnson, in the #48 Lowe’s Chevy, posted the best one-lap qualifying speed with a lap of 183.816mph.(DIS PR).
