Boogity boosts Pop Warner team to playoffs Thanks to offensive line coach Andy Cospito’s friendship with NASCAR on FOX analyst and three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip, players on the Ormond Beach (Fla.) Panther Pop Warner Junior Midgets football team have taken their DW devotion to a new level. Check out photos of the team: The offensive linemen — seventh and eighth graders at Ormond Beach Middle School — wear “Boogity, Boogity, Boogity” t-shirts under their pads on game days and have rallied around Waltrip’s trademark phrase to a playoff berth. Cospito has been DW’s bodyguard at the Daytona International Speedway in nearby Daytona Beach, Fla. for several years, and he and his players watch NASCAR on FOX races, chanting along with Waltrip at the start of the races. The linemen took the chant from green-flag racing to the gridiron, protecting quarterback Troy Danhower as Cospito protects DW. The Panthers, led by head coach Gibb Danhower, were 9-0 through October 29, the opening day of the playoffs. All the members of the team are big FOX and Hollywood Hotel fans, always asking questions about NASCAR on FOX race analysts Jeff Hammond, Larry McReynolds and, of course, DW. As the joke goes and the kids say, Cospito is one of DW’s BIGGEST fans.(All Waltrip.com)(10-29-2002)
