A spin by Greg Biffle brought out the caution with three laps remaining, so the race ended in anti-climactic fashion, prompting track president H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler to apologize to the fans over the public address system.(AJC)(5-25-2003)
UPDATE: Wheeler laid into NASCAR Saturday afternoon, moments after the Busch Series Carquest 300 ended under caution. He used the public address system to apologize to fans for the finish, then angrily told NASCAR president Mike Helton that his organization doesn’t care about the fans. In this case, Wheeler was wrong. NASCAR has been using a “flag rule” to cover late-race incidents this year. Depending on the track’s length, officials won’t stop a race for track cleanup if fewer than five laps remain. Saturday’s race went under caution at lap 196, leaving officials no choice but to let it finish under caution.(Daily Press)(5-26-2003)
