Joe Henderson III, a lanky 18-year-old from Franklin, made local racing history last night at Fairgrounds Speedway. Henderson became the first black driver to compete in the 45-year-old track’s premier Late Model division, driving a car fielded by Bobby Hamilton. And although it was short he dropped out after seven laps he said it was sweet. Henderson said he hopes to race again, ”as soon as Bobby gets ready. It’s all up to him.” ”We wanted to put Joe in a car, turn him loose and see what he can do,” said Hamilton, who was on hand to coach the young racer. ”I’ve watched him run in some [in lower divisions] and I think he’s got promise. I like his spirit.”( Tennessean )(6-15-2003)
