A First at Fairgrounds:

Joe Henderson III, a lanky 18-year-old from Franklin, made local racing history last night at Fairgrounds Speedway. Henderson became the first black driver to compete in the 45-year-old track’s premier Late Model division, driving a car fielded by Bobby Hamilton. And although it was short — he dropped out after seven laps — he said it was sweet. Henderson said he hopes to race again, ”as soon as Bobby gets ready. It’s all up to him.” ”We wanted to put Joe in a car, turn him loose and see what he can do,” said Hamilton, who was on hand to coach the young racer. ”I’ve watched him run in some [in lower divisions] and I think he’s got promise. I like his spirit.”( Tennessean )(6-15-2003)
