Six of the seven drivers who attempted to do double duty in Saturday’s Blue Lizard Suncream 200 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series as well as the Dodge/Save Mart 350 successfully achieved it, again led by Boris Said. Said put Ken Schrader’s #99 Chevrolet into the field in eighth — eight-tenths of a second behind pole winner Eric Holmes. Other two-timers included Travis Kvapil in 11th, Kyle Busch in 13th, Dave Blaney in 16th, Michael Waltrip in 25th and Chris Cook in 30th. Bill Davis Racing’s shop foreman Tom Hubert, who made the Cup race in Kirk Shelmerdine’s #27 Ford in 35th, did not post a qualifying speed for the Southwest Series race and failed to qualify.(NASCAR.com)(6-25-2005)
UPDATE – Results: For Tom Dyer of Corte Madera, the pendulum swung wildly during Saturdary’s Blue Lizard Australian Suncream 200 at Infineon Raceway. To start with, the Jim Russell Racing School instructor had to pull off the grid to fix a radio problem and started last in the 42-car field. By Lap 16, he was 21st, and by Lap 28, he was 11th. When all the dust had cleared, he had beaten teammate Eric Holmes for the win in the prelude NASCAR AutoZone Southwest Series event to Sunday’s Dodge/Save Mart 350 for NASCAR Nextel Cup Series machines. The official margin of victory was .449 of a second over Holmes, who dogged Dyer to the end. Bryan Germone was third, followed by Kenny Shepherd and Chris Cook. Cook was the higest finisher of the six drivers who will race in the Cup race, the others, Kyle Busch 9th, Kvapil 12th, Blaney 32nd [transmission], Said 36th [accident] and Waltrip 41st as he withdrew from the race.(Infineon Raceway).(6-26-2005)
