An animal-welfare group headed by NASCAR driver Greg Biffle [gregbifflefoundation.com] and his fiancée [Nicole Lunders] hope Iredell County [NC] will work with it to improve the plight of dogs and cats at the county animal shelter. Iredell County Animal Control continues to euthanize animals at a higher rate at the shelter it runs than surrounding counties, including Mecklenburg. Friends of the Animals says Iredell County can do better. The Statesville-based group wants to fund an endowment to benefit the shelter, including underwriting the cost of the shelter switching to lethal injection of animals from the present method of a carbon-monoxide gas chamber. Friends of the Animals also would build a multimillion-dollar animal adoption and education center for the county, said Dr. Kathy Kramer, a Charlotte veterinarian formerly of the Animal Hospital of Statesville.(Charlotte Observer)(8-3-2007)
