#9-Marcos Ambrose won the pole for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 Sprint Cup Series race at Sonoma with a speed of 95.262mph for a new track record [in the current layout], his 2nd pole of 2012, 2nd pole in a row and 2nd career pole. #24-Gordon starts 2nd followed by #48-Johnson, #16-Biffle, #56-Truex, Jr., #15-Bowyer, #18-Busch, $51-Busch, #17-Kenseth and #39-Newman. Last weeks race winner, #88-Earnhardt Jr., starts 19th.
Ambrose is only the third driver to ever win his first career pole then back it up with another pole the following race, joining Casey Mears [2004 Indy & Pocono] and Billy Wade [1964 Old Bridge, NJ & Bridgehampton, NY]. Ambrose became the 4th foreign born driver to win a pole last week at Michigan and is the 2nd foreign born driver to win more then one pole, Juan Pablo Montoya has seven poles.
