Just after her husband clinched the pole for Friday nights Dollar General 300, Samantha Busch stepped in front of a hospitality tent full of breast cancer patients and their families to give them a little bit of good news. And it didnt have a thing to do with racing. ‘I want you to know that your medical bills are covered’ Busch said, presenting a check for $80,000 as she wiped away tears. One by one the breast cancer champions (the preferred term by the foundation) came up to hug Busch, pick up a bright pink bag of goodies, and share stories with the woman who spearheaded the fundraising effort that will help them fight for their lives. ‘Breast cancer touches everybody; its somebodys sister or wife or mother or aunt’ Busch said. ‘For us its a wonderful employee at KBM whos a survivor. Its wonderful to hear the stories and know that were making a difference in their lives.” The Pretty In Pink Foundation exists to provide financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients in North Carolina with quality, life-saving medical treatment regardless of their ability to pay. It was those qualities that drew the Busch family to this local organization. ‘These 12 champions have come from Charlotte and right around here theyre neighbors’ Busch said. ‘We knew we had to help them so that the only thing they had to focus on was getting better. Kyle Busch couldnt be at the presentation because of his on-track duties, but he made sure to mention the effort after his pole-winning run. ‘Samantha has done a wonderful job with all of our Pretty In Pink Foundation people that are here’ Busch said. ‘We raised a lot of money for them this week.
