NASCAR veteran Tommy Joe Martins will close out the year for BJ McLeod Motorsports in the Ford EcoBoost 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It will be the Martins’ first NASCAR start on the 1.5 mile track, and his first appearance in a championship race in the NASCAR playoffs.
"To say I’m excited is an understatement," Martins said. "We’re in a battle in the owners points with a few other teams, and we want to maintain our spot heading into next year. This is a clutch situation for us & I can’t thank BJ & Jessica enough for trusting me to be the guy for the job."
In 2018, Martins has made 18 starts for BJMM & averaged a top-25 finish. All told, Martins has scored the most points for the organization than any other driver this season.
"Seeing the growth of the team this year – the progression from last year when BJ first called me – it’s really amazing," Martins said.
The stats back up Martins’ optimism. When Tommy Joe made his first start for BJMM at Pocono in 2017, the #8 & #78 were 34th & 39th in the Xfinity owner’s points standings. Heading into Homestead this season, they sit 25th & 26th.
"When I first hopped in the #78 car last year, our goal was to finish races. Provide some consistency. Now when we show up I’m disappointed if we aren’t running around the top-20. That says a lot about this team & the people on it," Martins said. "Now we just need a solid finish to close this year out the right way."
