March 30 – Today in Jayski’s NASCAR history

March 30, 1998

      • Jeff Gordon will run a special paint scheme in the 1998 Winston at Charlotte, May 16th. It will be the #24 Dupont Chromalusion Chevy. This car is painted with the a revolutionary paint that has a holographic and 3D effect and costs $37/ounce. I hear the car will change colors as it circles the track during the race.(thanks Ian)(3-30-98)
      • Look for the Heilig Meyers Taurus to have a different paint scheme for the rest of the season. With Junie Donlavey watching the races at home these days he discovered that it was hard to pick out his #90 Heilig-Meyers Ford in a crowd, considering
how many cars have black roofs. The car will now have a green roof to help it stand out.(Thanks Greg), it didn’t have the different look at Texas(3-30-98)
      • Diamond Ridge will take some time off, and will NOT compete in either Texas or Martinsville WC races. DRM will do some internal reorganization. Jeff Green will remain the driver for the WC team. A 2nd team has been started to field cars (#92 Chevy) for Sadler in 5 races, starting at Charlotte. Diamond Ridge is NOT closing. Simply restructuring due to poor performance this year. Gary Bechtel is 100% committed to fielding both Cup & BGN teams now and in the future. Elliott Sadler is NOT replacing Jeff Green at Texas or any where else. Jeff Green may substitute drive for some other teams in the meantime.(3-30-98)
      • Rich Bickle will be driving the #17 Sears-Diehard Truck of newly named T.J. Motorsports at this weekend’s NCTS race at Homestead, FL. Tim J. Beverley, the new owner of Darrell Waltrip’s #17 organization, has secured the driving services of Bickle for a one-race Truck deal. Bickle’s former NCTS crewchief Dave McCarty and a mixed cadre of Truck and WC crew members from the #17 shops will prep and crew the Truck. #17 Truck is unsponsored for this race, but the team is working to remedy that before race time.(TNN- www.country.com)(3-30-98)
      • Waddell Wilson, General Manager, was let go effectively immediately from the #17 Tim Beverley Team(the old DW team), also Keith Waltz the Communications Director quit.(3-30-98)
      • I hear Morgan Shepherd may replace Wally Dallenbach permanently in the #46 First Union Chevy and that the team was ecstatic with his performance at Bristol.(3-30-98)
      • I hear the reason for Dale Earnhardt’s poor finish at Bristol was not his car but a problem with their rear tire changer who twice failed to tighten the lug nuts which forced the team to bring the car back to pit road costing them valuable positions. Larry McReynolds told one trackside reporter that the car was capable of a top-10 finish(3-30-98), I also hear it was a hub problem(3-31-98)
      • Bill Ingle crew chief/team manager of the #10 Tide Ford was fined $2,000 for the weight box with lead that fell out of Ricky Rudds Ford and Rusty Wallace ran over causing him to crash. Ingle will appeal the fine.(NASCAR Today Radio/RPM2Nite)(3-30-98)
      • Three crew members from the #81 Square-D Ford team and driver Kenny Wallace were fined $500 each for running on the track when Wallace wrecked. Crew Chief Newt Moore, and crew members Buddy Cram and Jason Shapiro fined(RPM2Nite)(3-30-98)
      • Jason Jarrett will run Chevy’s instead of the Fords for DAJ Racing, his Dad’s BGN team. Father Dale will continue to drive the #32 Ford’s while Jason will drive the #32 Chevy’s, starting at Hickory on 4/11. The team hopes to improve it’s performance by running the Monte Carlo(NASCAR Online)(3-30-98)
