- Edwards to sport Ford EcoBoost scheme at Darlington: The #99 Ford of Carl Edwards will feature a Ford EcoBoost scheme at Darlington Raceway this weekend. For 2014, EcoBoost will be available on more than 90% of the FORD nameplates, rising to 95% by 2015. EcoBoost technology combines smaller overall size with turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing for outstanding performance and fuel economy. Better fuel efficiency and lower fuel bills are the top reasons for EcoBoost engines. Edwards on Darlington: “We have EcoBoost on the car this week, it’s only the decals though because EcoBoost is so technologically advanced I don’t think they’d allow it. It would be an unfair advantage if we actually had an EcoBoost engine. Darlington is a lot of fun. It’s a 500 mile race so it is a true test of man and machine, and it is one of the toughest races of the year. It’s a fast race track, there is so much history there, and to win there would be great.”(Roush Fenway Racing), see an image of the scheme on the #99 Team Schemes page.(4-10-2014)
- Fresh From Florida debuts on the #43 at Darlington: The #43 team wants to win every week, but this week, they have an additional incentive. Crew Chief Trent Owens grew up just a few miles from Darlington Raceway and says a win at the track “Too Tough To Tame” would rank up with a Daytona 500 win. Aric Almirola will look to continue Owens’ success at the track. With consecutive top-10 finishes in the last five seasons as crew chief, Almirola would like to add a Sprint Cup Series top-10 to the list. This weekend, the Fresh From Florida campaign will makes its debut on the famed #43. The campaign, led by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, is focused on building awareness and sales of fresh seafood, produce and other Florida products (RPM), see an image of the scheme on the #43 Team Schemes page.(4-10-2014)

It may have been the ceremonial first pitch before Tuesday night’s Royals-Tampa Bay game, but Edwards was all business, just as he is in a race car. The right-hander’s fastball blistered Billy Butler’s mitt … just a bit outside. “You’ve got a pretty good arm,” Butler, an avowed NASCAR fan, shouted to Edwards. Edwards, from Columbia, was supposed to take some batting practice and shag fly balls during his appearance promoting the May 10 Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. But his plane was delayed out of Charlotte, where he was taping a commercial, and the Royals’ batting practice had ended. That didn’t diminish the enjoyment of his first trip to Kauffman Stadium, a place Edwards has driven past countless times en route to Kansas Speedway the last 14 years but never visited. “That’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever done,” a starry-eyed Edwards said as he came off the field and fist-bumped a cadre of Royals players, coaches and manager Ned Yost, another NASCAR buff. “I was a little nervous about the first pitch. I warmed up a little bit (Monday) night. I haven’t thrown a baseball for a long time. My strategy was to throw it as hard as I could.”(Kansas City Star)(4-10-2014)
- Boeing Built Marines an Osprey Jeep with NASCAR Connection: One of the drawbacks of the Marines’ MV-22 Osprey has been its inability to take aboard an all-terrain, multi-role combat vehicle and deliver it to the fight. The vehicle would have to be only five-feet wide to fit the tight confines of the tilt-rotor aircraft and also have enough power to handle the 60 percent grade of the off-on ramp. Boeing and MSI Defense Solutions, of Mooresville, N.C., have developed the Phantom Badger Internally Transportable Vehicle as a solution to the Marines’ problem. MSI Defense Solutions worked with NASCAR teams before it started working with the Pentagon. The 60-inch wide Badger has a 240 horsepower multi-fuel engine, can ford 3 feet of water and can hit 80 mph on paved roads, according to the manufacturers. The vehicle is a much easier fit into the more spacious cabins of the CH-47, the C-130 and the C-17. Boeing played up the modularity of the Badger that would allow it to be configured for a range of missions, including reconnaissance, explosive ordnance disposal, mounted weaponry, and combat search and rescue.(defensetech)(4-10-2014)
