  • Motorsports fans will have a unique opportunity to experience The Winston online as country.com presents its second live webcast Saturday, May 16 during TNN’s live telecast of the Winston Cup race beginning at 7:00pm/et from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The webcast on www.country.com, TNN’s Internet site, will kick off Wild, Wild Web Week, the cable network’s themed schedule of interactive programming. The live webcast will allow Internet users to follow the action via in-car cameras in top contenders’ cars. A special www.thewinston.com web site (available for access beginning May 8) will provide www.country.com motorsports fans access to real-time audio and video transmitted directly to the site from the cars as they speed around the track.(TNN)(5-7-98)

  • A federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit accusing NASCAR of antitrust price fixing will go forward to trial. NASCAR’s Motion to Dismiss was denied. The lawsuit charges that NASCAR participated in a conspiracy to fix the price of souvenirs and merchandise sold at stock car races. The lawsuit charges that NASCAR "implemented the conspiracy by circulating price lists to vendors, meeting secretly, monitoring vendors’ prices, and disciplining vendors who violated the price-fixing agreement." The conspiracy began as early as 1991, the complainant charges. The lawsuit contends that NASCAR entered into agreements to fix the minimum prices of souvenirs and merchandise sold at NASCAR racing. The decision was issued by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in the lawsuit of: In re: Motorsports Merchandise Antitrust Litigation, D.C.. N. Ga, No. 1:97-cv-2314-TWT, 3-20-98. The decision was reported in the April 16, 1998 issue of Antitrust & Trade Regulation Report, BNA, Vol 74, No 1856.(Beserver)(5-7-98)

  • Southern New Jersey’s locally produced, live motorsports television program is now available to race fans on the worldwide web at www.raceshow.com. In cooperation with Southern New Jersey Internet Inc. (SNJI), RACING CONNECTION host Jack Stanton has developed RACING
    CONNECTION Online with plans to offer race fans up-to-date racing news, feature stories, driver profiles and the Online Photo Gallery featuring NASCAR stars as well as weekly short track warriors.(5-7-98)
  • Fox Sports Senior VP/Communications Vince Wladika denied a report that the network is in talks with a group led by Joe Mattioli III, the son of Pocono Raceway owner Dr. Joe Mattioli, about a new stock car series to be televised on Fox. Wladika told THE DAILY that Fox did meet once with the Mattioli-led group and was presented with a proposal which included Wednesday night primetime coverage. But Wladika said the network is "very pleased" with its primetime line-up, which includes "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Party of Five." Wladika: "We’ve always been very interested in auto racing and NASCAR. Someone pitched us an idea – we get ideas pitched to us all the time. But we categorically deny the report and we are not at all involved."(5-7-98)
  • In celebration of NASCAR’s 50th Anniversary, Melling and the Cartoon Network will be sporting a "birthday cake" look at the Winston Open. The #9 Taurus will be painted pink and blue and feature the Cartoon Networks most notable charactures cavorting in "splattered" birthday cake and icing. The car will run through the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend.(5-7-98)
