Ricky Rudd had the field covered late in the inaugural Winston Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway.
But when Rudd’s engine gave up the ghost with 15 laps to go, the lead went to Alan Kulwicki. Watching from the pits that day was Paul Andrews, Kulwicki’s crew chief. As the laps continued to wind down, Andrews tried to stay calm. Although he’d been on the job with Kulwicki less than a year, Andrews had been in this position too many times before in ASA and short-track competition.
Kulwicki won that day, going away … and he was only getting warmed up.
This is Paul Andrews’ story.
