When Cale Yarborough left Junior Johnson & Associates at the end of the 1980 season, Jeff Hammond made the case for a replacement that would’ve shaken the course of NASCAR history to its very foundations. Why not get Dale Earnhardt? Hammond was friends with Earnhardt, and had known his father, Ralph. Johnson, however, wanted a seasoned driver, one who’d been through enough accidents to know what the sport was all about.
