The Scene Vault: Jeff Hammond and the 1983 Daytona 500

By Rick Houston

Darrell Waltrip has called it an accident that changed the course of his career.

Jeff Hammond remembers it like it was yesterday.

That’s how vicious Waltrip’s crash in the 1983 Daytona 500 turned out to be.

As he attempted to race the leader back to a caution flag and get back on the lead lap, Waltrip instead crashed coming off turn four. He slammed hard into a large concrete wall to the inside of the track, and shot back onto the track. Although no one hit him, the damage had been done.

This is Jeff Hammond’s story.
