Storyline – Playoff tripleheader at low-wear Las Vegas: All three of NASCAR’s national series will hold playoff races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend, and they will do so on a well established tire set-up.  The Cup cars first ran this combination at Las Vegas last fall when Goodyear made a change on its right-side tread compound to give the cars more grip.  Las Vegas is considered a low tire wear track so Goodyear designs its compounds for the track to introduce wear.  This combination of tires for Las Vegas is aligned with two other low wear tracks – Michigan International Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway.

“Since Las Vegas is a low wear track, we formulate our tread compounds to specifically introduce some wear on this type of surface,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.  “Last fall, we were able to add a little more grip to the right-side tire at Las Vegas and a couple other similar tracks.  After some positive results in 2020, we have brought that back to the track in 2021, and that has continued with earlier races at Las Vegas, Texas, Kansas and Michigan with this right-side.”

Notes – Three NASCAR national series return to Las Vegas on March tire set-up: Teams in all three of NASCAR’s national series will run the same tire set-up at Las Vegas this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that all these teams ran at this track during the spring race weekend . . . the Cup cars first ran this tire set-up at Las Vegas last September, with the Xfinity cars and Trucks aligning with them in March . . . in addition to Las Vegas, NASCAR teams run this same tire combination at Michigan (Cup and Xfinity only) and Texas (all three series), and run this right-side tire at Kansas (all three series) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Las Vegas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater  than that of the outer tire.
