The playoffs are down to just eight drivers after another round of eliminations, including reigning champion Kyle Larson. With only four races left, it’s crunch time for those drivers still left in the playoffs. It’s the veteran who’s never won the big one who’s at the top, Denny Hamlin.
Hamlin is given +600 odds to win the race, or an implied 14.3% chance to come out on top. He’s part of a crowded field at the top though. Four other drivers are given at least a 10% chance to get the victory. Chase Elliott is given +800 odds, as is Larson. Last week’s winner Christopher Bell is given +900 odds, which ties him with Kyle Busch.
Former champion and current second place driver Joey Logano isn’t getting much respect though. Logano is given +1600 odds, or an implied 5.9% chance to win the race. That has him outside the top-10 on the market, four drivers already eliminated have better odds than the former champion.
Quote from OddsChecker spokesman Kyle Newman, “The championship is still very much up for grabs. To this point only two of the six playoff races have been won by playoff drivers. With eliminated drivers competing at such a high level anything can happen. Just look at last week when six of the eight drivers finished outside the top-12, including two who finished outside the top-25. With the races that competitive it shouldn’t be a surprise that four eliminate drivers are among the top-10 to win the races this week. After all, they’ve won more races than the playoff drivers have.”
