Dean Thompson transported to hospital following crash at Texas Motor Speedway: UPDATES

UPDATE 4-6-2023: Following medical evaluations after his on-track incident at Texas Motor Speedway, Dean Thompson has been cleared by NASCAR to return to competition behind the wheel of the #5 Thompson Pipe Group Toyota Tundra TRD Pro this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.

UPDATE 4-2-2023: “Dean Thompson has been evaluated and released from the hospital. He will undergo further evaluation upon returning to Charlotte, NC and will need clearance from NASCAR’s medical professionals to race at Bristol Motor Speedway,” TRICON Garage said in a statement over night regarding the status of Dean Thompson following his crash at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday.

UPDATE: “Just to update y’all I’m doing good, just getting some scans done, then I’m gonna go have a beer when I get home,” Thompson shared in a light-hearted social media post on Saturday evening.

“Also thank you to everyone for all the love and support. Especially the infield care center nurses and staff. Truly blessed to be able to do what I do.”

Original post: #5-Dean Thompson was one of four drivers involved in a vicious wreck on lap 146. Thompson’s battered Toyota took multiple hard hits, first with the wall, followed by two hard hits from other trucks unable to avoid his machine. He climbed from his race truck under his own power before receiving medical assistance. He was awake and alert following the accident, but was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center for further evaluation.

AND: On a late restart, Thompson’s truck got loose and made contact with the wall, sending him spinning back down the track toward the field. Several trucks made contact with the No. 5, ending in a side-door collision with its passenger-side frame. Thompson was able to exit the truck under his own power but was carried into an ambulance on a stretcher after visible discomfort.

All other drivers involved in the incident were checked and released from the infield care center.
