North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation looking into grant money use at Rockingham Speedway

North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation is looking into Richmond County commissioners using grant money to pay Rockingham Speedway’s overdue bill to a vendor.

In August, Hamlet, North Carolina, City Manager John Terzui accused Richmond County officials of violating four state statutes when they authorized $375,000 to pay a SAFER barrier company that was preparing to put a lien on the historic speedway. Terzui’s request came two days after NASCAR announced the Rockingham track was on its 2026 O’Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck Series schedules.

Terzui believes the Richmond County board of commissioners failed to comply with economic development statutes and misused public funds.
