UPDATE: “Paul McIlhenny, CEO of the company that owns Tabasco’s
sponsorship of the car now driven by Darrell Waltrip, spiked a few rumors Tuesday. The McIlhenny Co. isn’t necessarily on the verge of severing its sponsorship ties to the No. 35 car, which was a Pontiac owned by Bob Hancher before being absorbed last
week by the Chevrolet operation owned by Tim Beverley. All McIlhenny wants is information, and he hopes to get it from Beverley, a man he never has met, before Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Beverley bought out Waltrip’s unsponsored
team last spring and started Tyler Jet Motorsports. McIlhenny wants to know what percentage of the team is owned by Hancher, with whom his company has the contract, and whether Pontiac is completely out of the picture. “We currently have a very valid
contract,” McIlhenny said. “We’re currently committed to NASCAR and car No. 35.” There is more to the story at Tabasco wants answers on mergers by Skip Wood.
