After finishing second to Tony Stewart in the Winston Open by a margin of nearly five seconds, a dejected Jimmy Spencer admitted to being a sore loser. His comments: “….They (the #20 Home Depot Pontiac) had a lot of horsepower in that car. A lot of them have a lot of horsepower, unfortunately, the 23 doesnt. Oh yeah, we had a good motor. Jimmy drives very aggressively and wants the car to have a certain feel when he gets back in the gas, coming off of the corners. However, that style of engine greatly diminishes the higher rpm horsepower, hurting high straightaway speed. In The Winston Open, we gave him the style of engine that he wanted, and all through practice and the 25-lap qualifying race, he was pleased with that combination. Watching the races from above the grandstands confirmed my observation that the engine style that we would like to give him is the one that he needs. The other factor is that the Chevrolet engine, with the new SB2 cylinder head, now produces as much horsepower, if not more, than the best Ford engines. Combine that with the aerodynamic drag advantage that the Pontiac and the Monte Carlo have over the Taurus, and it is hard to keep up with a good GM car on the straightaway.”(Cotter PR)
