Atlanta Mourns

The flags at Atlanta Motor Speedway have flown at half-staff since Friday, May 12, in memory of young race car driver Adam Petty, who lost his life in a practice crash at New Hampshire. Petty competed in the last two Busch Series races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, finishing 25th and 34th, but he will be remembered most for his enthusiasm and willingness to help out. Petty gladly became involved in promoting the races for Atlanta Motor Speedway, appearing on several television and radio shows. The family’s history with the Speedway extends well before Adam, though. Richard Petty, Adam Petty’s grandfather, is third on the track’s all-time win list with six. He also ran the final race of his brilliant career in Atlanta at the end of the 1992 season. In honor of Richard Petty and what he has meant to NASCAR racing, Atlanta Motor Speedway created the Richard Petty Garden, which is adjacent to the gift store. A seating grandstand was also named for Petty, who was known as “The King.” “The Petty family has been much of the reason for America’s fascination with NASCAR racing,” said Ed Clark, president of Atlanta Motor Speedway. “Tough as nails on the track, yet warm, caring and fun off the track, the Pettys represent much of what is good about America. We all share their grief in this difficult time.”(AMS PR)(5-17-2000)
