What happened to….Stanley Smith?

What happened to….Stanley Smith? It happened in 1993, but for Stanley Smith it seems like yesterday. He was racing at Talladega Superspeedway when the field of cars thundered into the first turn — the fastest stretch on the track, where speeds reached 200 mph — when his car collided with another. Jimmy Horton hurdled over the wall. Smith’s car slammed head-first into the concrete retainer. His skull was crushed and a major artery was severed in his neck. ”I almost didn’t make it,” Smith recalls. ”They gave me nine units of blood on the way to the hospital. They managed to put my skull back together, but I lost the use of my left eye. I can see a little bit out of it, but I can’t move it and at times I have double-vision.” Smith’s biggest comeback hurdle, aside from overcoming his physical problems, was convincing his wife, Delphia, and three grown children to let him back in a race car. Since his near-fatal crash, Smith has been content to compete in NASCAR’s lower divisions. Smith admitted his left eye sometimes presents problems.
