Sad News: Daytona International Speedway closed out its season of competition the same way it started 2001 — with a gut-wrenching racing death. Michael Davis Jr., a 17-year-old from Coventry, Ohio, died Sunday afternoon after his go-kart slammed into the outside wall in the tri-oval area during a World Karting Association race. Davis became the fourth competitor to die at the racetrack during the 2001 season, a grisly streak started by Dale Earnhardt, who was killed instantly when he crashed on the last lap of the Feb. 18 Daytona 500.(Daytona Beach News Journal)(1-1-2002)
