Racing Education and Literacy Project: Racecarnuts.com has launched their new “Racing Education and Literacy Project.” The REAL project, which consists of online learning modules based on auto racing, hopes to challenge youth and adults alike through quizzes and questions. While the quizzes are designed to increase the math literacy of K-12 students, adults will also have fun coming up with the correct answers. REAL, which was developed by Robin Turner at 200mph MEDIA, has 10 learning modules online now and at least 8 more are in the development stages. Robin, who is also a professor of accounting, economics and business at the Rowan-Cabbarus Community College in North Carolina, designed the lessons to increase critical thinking and analysis, as well as basic math skills. The questions are formulated to meet existing Standards of Learning. The individual questions are both educational in that they provide information, and contain an element of challenge to come up with the right answer. Racecarnuts.com enourages race fans to challenge their children with these questions based on REAL autoracing scenarios. Teachers are free to use the materials in their classroom to sharpen math skills of their students. Teachers can also forward links to Racecarnuts.com for their literacy programs and recommend additional topical material for development. Use of a calculator in problem solution is recommended.
