Sad News: ARCA driver Cavin Councilor, 38, died when the Malibu Piper he owned and was piloting crashed nose-first around 10 a.m., said Naples Police Capt. Victor Morales. “They took off, got up into the air and then the engine started to fail and then they came crashing to the ground,” Morales said. Passengers Shawn Michael King, 31, and Charles Royden Scherer, both of Naples, also died in the crash, Morales said. Scherer’s age was unavailable. The plane crashed beside a large tree near a building housing the Humane Society of Collier County. An official there declined comment.(USA Today/AP)(6-20-2002)
