NASCAR’s Managing Director of Competition Gary Nelson said researchers at the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility in Lincoln, NE, are hoping to complete a critical test of the Steel and Energy Foam Reduction [SAFER] barrier later this week. The SAFER system will be tested on a replica of a Richmond International Raceway wall, and positive results could lead to the installation of the barrier at RIR this season. The “soft-wall” technology made a successful debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year [and also at Talladega on some of the inside walls].( Richmond Times Dispatch )(2-24-2003)
