Hendrick Motorsports will join forces with the U.S. Navy this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where all four of the team’s NASCAR Winston Cup Series entries will display decals from fighter squadrons of the U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN 68 – more info at their site ), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Throughout the week leading up to Sunday’s 600-mile event, each Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet will display the Nimitz logo on the driver’s side “C-post,” along with the logos of two individual squadrons on the car’s opposite side. The eight units were able pick which entry would carry their artwork, adding some “friendly competition” between squadrons. The decals, also known as “zappers,” will be distributed as follows: #5 Kellogg’s / got milk? Chevrolet and driver Terry Labonte: VFA-41 “The Black Aces” (based in Lemoore, Calif.) and VFA-14 “Tophatters” (Lemoore). #24 DuPont Chevrolet and driver Jeff Gordon: VFA-97 “Warhawks” (Lemoore) and VFA-94 “Mighty Shrikes” (Lemoore). #25 UAW-Delphi Chevrolet and driver Joe Nemechek: VAQ-135 “Black Ravens” (Whidbey Island, Wash.) and VAW-117 “Wallbangers” (Point Mugu, Calif.). #48 Lowe’s Chevrolet and driver Jimmie Johnson: VS-29 “Dragonfires” (San Diego) and HS-6 “Indians” (San Diego). Each squadron employs up to 250 people and carries between four and 14 aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, EA-6B Prowler, E-2C Hawkeye 2000, S-3B Viking, and SH-60B Seahawk. On Aug. 5, 2002, six Hendrick Motorsports employees spent a day on the Nimitz as part of the Navy’s Distinguished Visitors Program, an initiative designed to increase public awareness and appreciation for the Navy. Named after Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, the ship was commissioned on May 3, 1975 in Newport News, Va., and is the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in her class. More than 18 stories high from keel to mast, the Nimitz was deployed to the Arabian Gulf from its home base in San Diego on March 3.( HMS PR )(5-21-2003)
