Kenny Brack, who’ll start Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 from the outside of the second row, and Robby Gordon, who’ll start directly in front of him, ran the fastest laps in the final practice session Thursday. Sweden’s Brack, who won the 1999 race when Gordon had to pit for fuel with two laps remaining, turned a fast lap of 228.707 mph during the two-hour Carburetion Day practice. Brack is one of two drivers for former winner Bobby Rahal. Gordon, one of four drivers for the Andretti Green team, had a circuit at 227.850 mph. Gordon turned a few laps before flying to Charlotte, N.C., to qualify for Sunday’s World 600. He’ll race in the Indy 500, where he’ll be among the favorites, and then drive in the 600 the same day. Gordon will remaining in North Carolina for practice today and fly to Indianapolis tonight, accompanied by 200 fans who will watch both races. He anticipates arriving back at the Carolina track about 20 minutes before Sunday night’s race there. “Our main focus today was just making sure the car shifted gears, the aero balance was right and the gearing was right,” Gordon said. “The car feels very good and I’m very confident.”( Hoosier Herald Times )(5-23-2003)
