A Lower Lake [CA] race car driver died when she lost control and struck a crash wall at Lakeport Speedway at the Lake County Fairgrounds, the race course’s first deadly accident. Marlene Baker crashed during a “ladies powder puff race” Saturday. Baker’s son was a passenger in the car and was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with a severe concussion. The crash occurred on the last lap of the last race of the evening on the quarter-mile oval track, Nadine Strauss, the speedway’s manager, said in a statement released Sunday evening.( Press Democrat )(8-4-2003)
