Prior to the formation of the NASCAR Busch Series in 1982, Late Model Sportsman races were held on the day prior to Lowes Motor Speedways NASCAR Winston Cup Series events. Winners included Bobby Allison (3 times), Darrell Waltrip (3), Morgan Shepherd (2), Ray Hendrick (2), David Pearson (1), Bill DeCoster (1), Wally Dallenbach Sr. (1), Dave Marcis (1) and Gary Balough (1). Sam Ard was the first NASCAR Busch Series regular to score a win at Charlotte, in the fall of 1983. He beat Dale Earnhardt to the checkered flag by 7.5 seconds.(NASCAR PR)(10-10-2003)
