The Franklin Institute [went there many times as a kid, since I was from South NJ], home to the world famous walk-through human heart [so cool], will offer visitors a glimpse into a heart-pounding sport tomorrow [July 21] when Racecar Day takes the green flag at the museum at 222 N. 20th St. in Center City. In partnership with Comcast SportsNet, the Franklin Institute has lined up a number of special attractions in addition to its usual blend of interactive science exhibits. The first 200 visitors will receive goody bags, one fan will win a VIP trip for four to Pocono Raceway this weekend, and there will be giveaways from other Philadelphia-area tracks and a tire-changing competition for novice pit-crew members. Minority involvement in motorsports will be examined through a presentation by the Philadelphia-based Urban Youth Racing School, with a special appearance by Bill Lester, the only African American driver competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, in the #22 Toyota Tundra. Robby Gordon, driver and team owner of the 7 Chevrolet on the Nextel Cup circuit, is also scheduled to be on hand tomorrow for a special presentation. In conjunction with the “drink smart” campaign of its sponsor, Jim Beam, Robby Gordon Motorsports will donate $10,000 to fund alcohol education programs at Temple University. The Franklin Institute opens at 9:30 a.m. Racecar Day festivities will run from noon to 5 p.m. The regular admission price to the Institute is $13.75 for adults and $11 for children 4 through 11. There is no additional charge for the Raceday activities.(Philadelphia Inquirer)(7-20-2005)
