NASCAR to throw competition caution to check tires at Indy:

NASCAR will have a competition caution early in Sunday’s Nextel Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to allow teams to check tire wear. What lap will be determined on Sunday. “We’ll sleep on it and figure out when,” series director John Darby said after Saturday’s qualifying. “It’s just to make everybody feel a little better.” Darby said tire wear was better than ever for Indianapolis during practice. The biggest fear is an overnight rain that could wash all the rubber off the track. Rain washed out Friday’s two practices and it took nearly two hours to get enough rubber back on the track to make many drivers feel comfortable. “If there is rain tonight they’re going to have to throw a mandatory caution at lap 5, lap 15 and at lap 30,” four-time Brickyard 400 champion Jeff Gordon said. “That’s the issue we’re being dealt right now. It’s pretty major. I was happy by the end of practice. We put 15 laps on a set of tires and it was getting better.”(ESPN.com)(7-29-2007)
