Sept. 5 — 1957: Gwyn Staley wins the third and final Cup Series race at New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Starting from the pole, Staley leads the first 62 and final 28 laps on the 1-mile dirt track and beats Lee Petty by nearly two laps. Bill Walker finishes third.
