A frightening sequence of events occurred in Saturday’s first NASCAR Xfinity Series practice at Iowa Speedway, but fortunately the only thing seriously injured was the #55 Chevy driven by Jamie Dick. A piece of metal sailed into Dick’s car – either through the windshield or side window, he said – and struck his helmet after it flew off a competitor’s car that was likely traveling well over 100 mph. “It was a decent hit. Good thing I was wearing a helmet, that’s what it’s for,” Dick said. “I feel fine. I could definitely feel it.” Dick would not identify the offending car. The piece of metal that struck him was either lead or tungsten that teams use to add extra weight to their stock cars, but the metal wasn’t properly bolted down. “All the spacers and lead started coming out,” Dick said. “I dodged the spacers, but I didn’t dodge the lead.” Dick, who is making his third Xfinity Series start of the season, was forced into a backup car. He was checked out at the medical center and cleared.(Des Moines Register)(5-16-2015)
